Show Yourself: Frozen II

Updated: Oct 19, 2020

In 2013 the movie that everyone was talking about was Frozen. It was the little movie that made millions and started a phenomenon. A phenomenon that’s still going strong today. I found out about Frozen from Idina Menzel. Being a theatre nerd and growing up in the late 90s and early 2000s I knew her work well. So to find out she was a lead in a Disney movie was big. Then finally seeing the movie I was in awe. It was so fresh and different. Since then the movie has spawned dolls, toys, games, snacks, theme park attractions, ice shows (which i saw, that’s another story) a broadway musical. And now the long awaited sequel.

After the first movie made a buhjillion dollars and had everyone wanting Elsa dresses. A sequel was adamant. After 4 years of development , Frozen 2 was released on November 22, 2019. As of this post the film now holds the record for the highest all time

worldwide opening for an animated film.

Side note, I will not give spoilers away!

So where did we leave off. The story is set three years after the first movie. Our heroines, Anna and Elsa, and their friends embark on a new adventure in search for the meaning of Elsa’s ice powers. That’s pretty much all I can say without giving anything away.

So what did I like about the movie? First off, The story. It’s more more adult this time as the girls have grown up to young women. There’s a lot of content for adults to not feel like they were seeing a kiddie movie. Also the the kids were not left out and there was plenty to keep them engaged. There’s a lot of Olaf being Olaf for the kids and it is funny, sometimes random but funny. I loved how it continues the story seamlessly and fills the gaps of where they left off, especially with the girls parents. I like the themes explored like independence, having to let go (get it get it) and self discovery. It was very well done.

Next the music. Is it as catchy as the first movie, not really. However it’s still a beautiful score by Christophe Beck with songs by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson- Lopez. Every main character gets to sing this time. For me that was a nice touch. The standouts was Kristoff’s song “Lost in the Woods”. In the movie it’s done like an 80s music video and that was genius and hilarious. But of course the 2 big Elsa numbers “Into the Unknown” and “Show Yourself” win the score. Idina Menzel kicked it out the park for me. I hope to see her at the Oscars next year to sing one or both of those songs.

While I’m at it shout-out to the cast. I think everyone was perfect. Also perfectly in tune with their characters.

So do I see room for another sequel. Well without giving anything away. The way the movie ended you can see the story continuing. Actually I have a few ideas on how to do it. On the other hand the story can end with this film. Everything is kind of tied up with a bow. But there’s always room for more.

If you want my opinion on Frozen 2, I loved it. If you enjoyed the first one, go see it. It a magical, heartfelt adventure.
